Lavrov called US clashes on Iran illegitimate

US attempts to push for an indefinite arms embargo on Iran are contrary to international law, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov told reporters on September 24. At a press conference following talks with his Iranian counterpart Mohammad Javad Zarif, Lavrov said that Russia and Iran, as well as the entire international community, categorically reject US claims to impose a certain indefinite arms embargo. The same countries are opposed, Lavrov noted, to the US attempt to activate the mechanism for restoring the previous UN Security Council sanctions resolutions. Sanctions were lifted in 2015 by UN Security Council resolution 2231 in connection with the creation of the Joint Comprehensive Action Plan (JCPOA). We are united in the fact that illegitimate initiatives and actions of the United States cannot have international legal consequences for other countries and cannot lead to any country having obligations to limit legitimate cooperation with Iran. Lavrov Russian Minister noted that Tehran interacts productively with the IAEA and that it is necessary to maintain the JCPOA. As previously reported by the news agency, Zarif, following negotiations with Lavrov, thanked Russia for its contribution to the preservation of the JCPOA, attacked by Washington.
