Belgian scientists proposed to teach rats to identify people with coronavirus

The assumption that rats can smell identify people infected with coronavirus was made by scientists from the Belgian charity Apopo. This was reported on September 27 by the Daily Star. Apopo CEO Christoph Cox claims that rats can be taught to be identified by the smell of people infected with coronavirus. Rodents, according to Cox, can detect anything that has a unique smell. At the same time, the specialist explained that the experiment with recognizing dogs infected with coronavirus was recognized as successful, which means that other animals with developed sense of smell can be used instead of dogs. Scientists suggest that it can take up to three months to train rats, their use as diagnoses will be hindered only by restrictions on transportation. It is noted that rats have already been successfully used to recognize patients with tuberculosis. Rodents have proved to be more effective diagnoses than a number of special medical tests. Earlier, the news agency reported on a hamster rat named Mogava, who was awarded Britain's highest award for animals, the Maria Deakin Medal. Rodent was trained to search for mines and shells by smell and helped detect several dozen ammunition.
